Supporting Athletes: How to Start the Mental Health Conversation

At Ahead of the Game, one of the most common questions we hear from coaches, parents, and even athletes themselves is:

“How do I talk to an athlete about getting help with mental performance or mental health—without making things worse?”

It’s a fair concern. These conversations can feel sensitive, and both sides may feel vulnerable. But handled with care, they can open the door to powerful growth and lasting change.


Start with Awareness

Before starting the conversation, take a moment to check in with your own emotions. It’s normal to feel nervous or protective. Then, calmly describe what you’ve noticed: changes in behavior, mood, or performance that concern you. Focus on observations, not judgments.


Listen Without Judgment

When the athlete responds, give them space. They may not share everything—and that’s okay. They might not even agree with your concern or be ready to talk yet. What matters is showing that you’re there, that you care, and that you’re willing to listen. Even if they’re not ready today, you may be planting a seed for the future.


Create a Safe Setting

Choose a private, comfortable environment for the conversation. If you’re a coach, limit the meeting to just you and perhaps one other trusted staff member. Athletes are more likely to open up when they don’t feel like they’re on display.


Normalize the Struggle

Mental challenges are part of the game—just like physical injuries. Share your own experiences or talk about high-profile athletes who have spoken openly about mental health. From Michael Phelps to Simone Biles to Tom Brady, some of the greatest champions in sports history have faced—and overcome—these challenges. Remind athletes that they’re not alone.


Shift the Perspective: Mental Fitness

Instead of framing it as “mental health problems,” talk about mental fitness. Just like lifting weights builds physical strength, mental training builds resilience, focus, and confidence. It’s not about fixing something that’s broken—it’s about investing in yourself to perform at your best.
